AI weed sprayer: camera-based spot spraying

An AI weed sprayer sees every weed from the boom and sprays only where it grows. This guide explains how camera spraying works, where green-on-brown and green-on-green fit, and what precision herbicide application changes on the farm.

What is an AI weed sprayer?

An AI weed sprayer is a boom sprayer with cameras and on-board artificial intelligence. The cameras look at the ground in front of the nozzles, the AI decides plant by plant whether it is a weed, and a fast valve opens only the nozzle above it. Everything else stays dry.

It needs no drones, prescription maps or internet connection: the decision is made on the machine, in real time, while you drive at normal working speed. WeedEye turns existing sprayers into AI spot sprayers with a retrofit kit, so you keep the machine you already know.

How camera spraying works

Four steps, repeated for every nozzle many times per second.

  1. 1

    See

FALCON camera units (WDUs) mounted every 1–1.5 m along the boom scan the strip in front of the nozzles.

  2. 2

    Decide

The AI model runs inside each unit and separates weeds from crop or soil in under 20 ms, without a cloud connection.

  3. 3

    Spray

RAPID solenoid valves open and close in 5 ms, so only the weed is hit – even at up to 20 km/h.

  4. 4

    Record

Every detection is logged with its position as GeoJSON, giving you a weed-pressure map of the field after each pass.

Green-on-brown and green-on-green

Precision weed control works in two situations, and the same WeedEye system handles both.

Green-on-brown

Green weeds on bare soil: stubble, fallow and pre-sowing burndown. Every green plant is a target, so the savings are the highest.

  • Stubble and fallow treatments
  • Pre-sowing and burndown passes
  • Up to 90% less herbicide

Green-on-green

Weeds growing inside a crop after emergence. Crop-specific AI models tell the weed from the crop, leaf by leaf.

  • Maize, sunflower, soybean, lentil and more
  • Crop and growth stage selected on the terminal
  • Typically 60–80% less herbicide

Field-sprayer output, not drone output

An AI spot sprayer keeps the full boom width and normal working speed of your field sprayer, so its area capacity is many times that of a spray drone. Because it applies much less liquid, one tank lasts longer and there are fewer refill stops – daily output can be even higher than with the same sprayer spraying broadcast.

  • Full boom width at working speed: a 24 m boom at 12 km/h covers roughly 20 ha per hour even with turns and headlands
  • Spray drones carry only 30–50 litres and stop often for refills and battery changes
  • Less liquid per hectare means fewer refill stops, so more hectares per day than broadcast spraying

The herbicide savings calculator shows the refill time saved on your farm.

What precision herbicide application changes

  • Herbicide use falls by up to 90%, depending on weed pressure
  • Water use and refill stops fall with it, so one tank covers more hectares
  • The crop and the soil between the weeds stay untreated
  • Resistance management gets easier: alternative modes of action can target just the survivors
  • Same workflow as broadcast spraying – no drone flights, maps or planning
  • Fits existing sprayers: Easy Kit for ISOBUS nozzle control, Full Upgrade Kit with RAPID valves

AI weed sprayer questions

How fast can an AI spot sprayer drive?
With WeedEye RAPID valves (5 ms), up to 20 km/h. With the Easy Kit, the speed is set by your existing valves, typically 12–15 km/h.
Does camera spraying need an internet connection?
No. Detection and valve control run entirely on the machine, so it works the same in fields without mobile coverage.
Can my existing sprayer become an AI weed sprayer?
In most cases, yes. Trailed, mounted and self-propelled boom sprayers can be retrofitted; our engineers confirm compatibility from the boom width, plumbing and terminal.
How much herbicide does precision weed control save?
Up to 90% in green-on-brown and typically 60–80% in green-on-green, depending on weed density. The herbicide savings calculator estimates it for your own field.
Is AI spot spraying faster than drone spraying?
Yes, by a wide margin. The WeedEye system works on your field sprayer, so it keeps the full boom width and working speed – a 24 m boom at 12 km/h covers roughly 20 ha per hour even with turns – while spray drones carry only 30–50 litres and must stop often for refills and battery changes. Because spot spraying uses far less liquid, one tank also lasts longer, so daily output can be higher than with the same sprayer spraying broadcast.
